Members
Sceaftesige re-creates a time when Englishmen, Norsemen and Normans inhabited this part of the country. Members
portray a range of these cultural groups and are encouraged to choose an authentic name that would have been common
in the period.
Members are allocated a rank — a title which would have been common in Anglo-Saxon society. Dependent
on their time and involvement in the group, members can become a
Thegn, a Ceorl (or
freeman, divided into
Geneat,
Kotsetla and
Gebur). Finally,
there are the theows, or
slaves, the newcomers
to the society and those who have incurred the displeasure of the group leader.
Many members have chosen to adopt a trade, a non-military skill which can be displayed at the Living History
Exhibits, whilst others concentrate solely on their life as a warrior within the Fyrd — the army of Sceaftesige.
Click on each member to find out more about their status and trade.
